Major McMurtry served in the Spanish American War as one of Theodore Roosevelt's "Rough Riders", and in World War I as second in command of the famous "Lost Battalion", for which he earned a Medal of Honor. Boasting impressive views of Frenchman's Bay from a spacious terrace overlooking an expansive lawn, The Bayview offers a spectacular setting within walking and biking distance to and from both the village of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Well appointed and furnished with original antiques and collectibles from abroad, the interiors of this period home offer a variety of hospitable spaces for dining and entertaining. Further enhancing the privacy and comfort that this gracious home offers is a recently renovated kitchen, formal gathering spaces and nine bedrooms, six of which offer en-suite bathrooms. Ratings and Reviews

Family vacation
by Faye P. on Jul 15, 2019

The Bayview is a wonderful older home which easily accommodated our family of 15 and is within walking distance of Bar Harbor village. The large patio with water view is lovely. The kitchen has several seating areas and is a great gathering space for children to work on puzzles or projects. We especially enjoyed the huge music room which has many sofas and a piano. The pool table room was a hit with some of the grandchildren. It was a fun week with many hiking opportunities in the park and some very good restaurants.

Vacation!
by Maura M. on Oct 19, 2018

This was our third visit to The Bayview. It is a grand house with lots of space that easily accommodated our group of 16. We love the location of The Bayview with its close proximity to town and the beautiful setting right on Frenchman Bay. Probably our favorite part of the house is the kitchen. Invariably, everyone in our group ends up congregating in the kitchen and this kitchen is spacious enough to easily handle our large group without feeling crowded. We had a great week at The Bayview and plan on returning in 2019.

We love The Bayview. It is a spacious, well equipped house in a great location that accommodates a large crowd. This is our second time renting The Bayview and have already booked it for next year.

Family vacation

The Bayview is a "Grand Old Lady" of a house. I have rented homes from coast to coast and this was the best. The kitchen is terrific and makes a great gathering place. The library was the perfect gathering spot in evenings, especially with a roaring fire in the fireplace. It was nice for everyone to have their own bedroom and bathroom. Plus, the backyard and dock were hit with big and little kids. We had football and baseball games, building tents and yard art out of sticks, and crabbing off the dock. The location to Acadia National Park made it so easy to go hiking or just looking at the beautiful views. Being so close to the Town of Bar Harbor was great for eating out when we did not want to cook in the fabulous kitchen. Everyone agreed it was the best vacation place and would love to return again. You could not ask for a better house or a better location.

Bar Harbor's village and surrounding rural residential areas are a popular destination for visitors to Acadia National Park. The town center offers diverse shops, restaurants and activities. Acadia National Park's Hulls Cove entrance, as well as other major entrances, are located just outside the village center. Not all properties listed as 'Bar Harbor' are actually in the village of Bar Harbor, since the town of Bar Harbor encompasses the northern half of Mt. Desert Island, most of which is quite rural in nature. However, homes within this area are usually between five and fifteen minutes' drive to the village center.
