Long Pond is the largest freshwater pond on Mt. Desert Island and serves as the reservoir to the village of Southwest Harbor. Swimming, kayaking, and fishing are popular activities on this lovely lake just west of Somesville. Southwest Harbor’s village center is approximately fifteen minutes away, and major park entrances are between ten and twenty minutes’ drive.
We spent a wonderful week at Long Pond View in mid-August along with 3 other couples. Plenty of parking for 4 vehicles and the house was large enough that we didn’t feel at all crowded. The location was perfect – right across the road from the northern end of Long Pond with swimming and kayaking, and only a short drive to other points of interest in the National Park. Perhaps the only drawback was that only 3 of the bathrooms were full baths but overall, not that much of an inconvenience for our group. A previous review suggested that the downstairs smelled musty so we kept the dehumidifier running and AC on while we were there and did not notice any mustiness. Kitchen was well stocked, closet space was more than adequate, and there is a fenced in back yard, deck with grill, and overhang to store kayaks and bikes out of the rain. Overall great place.
We were a group 0f 9 hiking friends who rented the house. It was nice and large and the kitchen was great for community cooking and sharing chores. Location is nicely out of the way from the hubbub and across from swimming. Lovely stay. The only difficult part was that the lower level where 3 bedrooms are was a bit damp and musty. Other than that, it was a pleasure to stay there.
