The Atlantic Brewing Company is home to Mainely Meat Barbecue. Pulled pork, sausages, ribs and chicken, as well as baked beans, coleslaw and potato salad are available seven days a week in season, with an all you can eat buffet every Saturday. The Atlantic Brewing Company’s full line of ales, plus seasonal specialties, are all available on tap at the bar. This unpretentious breakfast and lunch joint has been dishing up filling fare since 1976, and offers a glimpse of old Bar Harbor before T-shirt shops dominated the economy. Abel’s gets everyone’s vote for “lobster pound in the best setting.” Set in a spruce grove overlooking the incomparably beautiful Somes Sound, you can sit outside at picnic tables lit by torcheres or inside a large and cozy knotty pine dining room. Of course, the lobster dinner and blueberry pie are great, as are the Caesar salads with either lobster or grilled chicken. But the other thing you get at Abel’s is first-rate, fast and friendly waitress service. In fact, it’s both the setting and the service that distinguish Abel’s (and set its prices a bit higher). The business is still family-run.

Known around town simply as “The Colonel’s,” this restaurant serves up simple fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In front, the bakery turns out delicious breads, rolls, croissants, turnovers, and muffins, as well as cookies, cakes, whoopee pies, and other sumptuous desserts. There’s nary a dull moment at Charlotte Gill’s freewheeling lobster pound, where baby goats gambol about in the adjacent field, the affable staff hustles summer eats from the tiny kitchen, and the lobsters sometimes get to have as much fun as the customers. Gill’s 83-year-old dad, Charles, likes to sit outside, chat with visitors, and take it all in.
