Ian  Heyse

Sales Agent

Born and raised in Maine, Ian Heyse (pronounced “Hi-z”) lives in Lamoine with his partner and child, the third generation of his family to call their property home. There, he maintains a small farm, orchard, and nursery, reflecting his lifelong connection to the land and the natural environment.

Ian’s professional experience spans agriculture, construction, education, and sustainable development. After studying biology and ecology at Colorado College, he worked as an outdoor educator, dogsled guide, and leader of ecology-based service trips in Tanzania. He later pursued carpentry, timber framing, and residential construction in coastal Hancock County, earning a certificate in Building Science and Net Zero Design from Yestermorrow Design/Build in 2024.

Today, Ian draws on his background in building science, ecological restoration, and sustainable agriculture to help property owners develop homesteads and farms through his project management and consulting business. He believes that thoughtful development begins with understanding the unique character of each property and its surrounding environment.

Building Community

Ian’s commitment to community extends well beyond his work with the land. As a co-founder of Fogtown Brewing Company in Ellsworth, he helped establish a gathering place for live music, events, and community connection.

He also spent several years with The Community School of Mount Desert Island as an educator, program coordinator, and interim associate director, and continues to support its mission as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Outside of work, Ian enjoys surfing, climbing, biking, and making pottery.

Connecting People and Place

Ian brings a distinctive perspective to his real estate career at The Knowles Company, combining his knowledge of land, construction, and the local environment with a genuine appreciation for the communities of coastal Maine.

Working alongside the firm’s experienced brokers, he is committed to helping buyers and sellers make thoughtful, informed decisions about their properties. Whether considering a family home, undeveloped land, or a property with agricultural potential, Ian understands that real estate is about more than a transaction—it’s about the relationship between people and place.

He approaches his work with the belief that every property has its own story, possibilities, and responsibilities, and that finding the right fit benefits both the people who call it home and the land itself.
