First joining the company in 1989, Mia purchased the agency in 1994 with two broker/partners. She has successfully built upon the founder’s strong local traditions and high standard of professionalism ever since, growing an extensive national and international client base. Through her 35+ years of experience, she has developed a keen sense of the market and a clear vision of how to facilitate a successful transaction in the most professional and thorough manner. Under her direction the Knowles has consistently ranked in the top 3 among Mount Desert Island (MDI) area agencies over the past 30+ years. Originally from Berwyn, PA, she spent her childhood summers in Northeast Harbor where her paternal great grandparents the Hartes established a summer home in the early 1900s. Years of summering on MDI have fostered a deep sense of respect and gratitude for the gifts the Island shares with its residents. Mia attended Boston University and completed her BA in Economics at the University of Maine. She moved to Mount Desert Island full-time in 1986.
Mia’s passions outside of work include the successful raising of her two sons who have finished college and are growing their respective careers. She serves on numerous volunteer boards on MDI and was recently asked to join Mount Desert 365 Advisory Board. She is the former commodore of the Northeast Harbor Fleet and founded the Fleet’s sustainability committee in 2016. Off-island she sits on a family board and the Ocean Council for Oceana. A consummate sailor, and highly experienced racer, Mia still finds time to enjoy hiking, tennis, biking, and all forms of skiing. With Acadia National Park as her back yard and abundant sailing waters all around, she finds Mount Desert Island the perfect location in which to live and work.
