Located in the Eden Street Historic District of Bar Harbor and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this French-style home with 136 feet of private shorefront and ever-changing views of Frenchman’s Bay, Bar Harbor, and the Porcupine Islands, offers its guests timeless romance in a private oceanfront setting. And it’s all within walking or biking distance to Acadia National Park and the village of Bar Harbor! Bagatelle was designed and built in 1887 by famed architect, Arthur Rotch, who designed twenty Bar Harbor “cottages” between 1883 and 1890. Today, it’s one of only seven Arthur Rotch cottages that survived the great fire of 1947. Lovingly restored by expert craftsmen, rich interiors express the well-measured exuberance of Victorian residential architecture. With lavish moldings, fine wainscoting, and elaborate hand-carved mantels, the period’s desire for invention and variety are evident.

Bar Harbor’s village and surrounding rural residential areas are a popular destination for visitors to Acadia National Park. The town center offers diverse shops, restaurants and activities. Acadia National Park’s Hulls Cove entrance, as well as other major entrances, are located just outside the village center. Not all properties listed as ‘Bar Harbor’ are actually in the village of Bar Harbor, since the town of Bar Harbor encompasses the northern half of Mt. Desert Island, most of which is quite rural in nature. However, homes within this area are usually between five and fifteen minutes’ drive to the village center.
Bagatelle was an incredible place to host a family vacation with 3 generations present. The house is large, beautifully decorated, and very well stocked. Our toddler loved running around the house and there were even toys for her to play with. With her early bedtime, we enjoyed evenings on the front porch under blankets or at the fire pit in the yard. It was an easy drive into town, but with limited parking, we opted to walk most of the time (15-20 mins depending on how far you go). Acadia is just a short drive away, so this is the perfect home base. You are secluded enough with a yard and beautiful views, that you never feel guilty about spending too much time at the house. Thank you to our host for making us feel so welcome! This was truly a memorable vacation.
Our family of 13 visited in early June 2022 and the house was more than we had anticipated. Incredible location, beautiful views of Bar Island, and quiet! We had plenty of room to spread out. The house was well stocked. We enjoyed the history and charm of the home. It did take us a day or so to figure out which staircase to use to get to our bedrooms but it was worth it! Thanks for sharing your lovely home with our family, we hope to come back to stay.
After missing our annual bike trip with friends last year, and moving to Maine on top of that, we were thrilled to have been able to get together early this month for a week of cycling, hiking, yoga on the lawn, kayaking, eating, and drinking around the fire pit. We had room for everyone and big meals together, we even learned how to steam lobster, everything we needed was at the house. The house is unique and beautiful, like some place out of an Edith Wharton novel. Sunrise views and listening to the lapping water, walking the bar at low tide, and quick walks to town for groceries, ice cream, and the ferry to Schoodic. One big plus is that the house is half a block from the new bike route into the park which is direct and safe. We rode all the Carriage roads and climbed to South Bubble. It was perfect and worth the trip our friends made out from Oregon.
I came up with a group of girlfriends for a week of hiking and biking. The house was perfect! The best location, easy to walk to town and close to the park and the park loop. The days and evenings sitting on the porch overlooking the water–we didn’t want to leave. The house was very clean and well stocked. We plan to come again.
Bagatelle was perfect for a large family vacation. Our favorite time was sitting on the wide porch overlooking Frenchman Bay. It’s hard to decide if the morning or evening view is more spectacular. Staying in this historic home with the impressive Acadia National Park in its backyard, with Bar Harbor just a short walk away, made for a very memorable vacation.
