Barnes Homestead
Somesville, ME 04660-
Beds: 1 King, 2 Queens, 5 Singles
It isn’t often that one can find a “rusticator” style home that is both a charming step back into time while simultaneously feeling comfortable where it counts, but we feel the Barnes Homestead does just that! This delightful home resonates with a rich history of family visits spanning generations, and now it can be a part of your Maine tradition as well! Enjoying a tranquil setting with sweeping meadow views to the shores of Somes Sound and Acadia’s mountains beyond, this lovely property invites one to unplug, unwind, and get back to basics. Park trails, village shops and restaurants, and other island attractions are all between five and twenty minutes away.
FIRST FLOOR: Enter the main hallway from the drive. To the left, a roomy galley style kitchen opens into a pantry area with dishwasher and refrigerator. Just off the Kitchen is a small Half Bath. From here, step in to the “White Room,” a sitting room with fireplace and door leading to the front terrace. Further to the left again is the original structure, once a painting studio, and now converted to a charming great room with original exposed framing, showcase fireplace, large dining table that can seat six to twelve, and window seat capturing the water views. At the other end of the house is the Green Bedroom with a Single and water views, and a Primary Bedroom with Queen, water views, and semi-private Full Bath with tub only. This bath can also be accessed by a separate door to the hall.
SECOND FLOOR: Three Bedrooms are located on the second floor. The Blue Room serves as a second primary bedroom and features a Queen Bed and semi-private Full Bath with tub only, as well as water views. Similar to the bath on the first floor, this bath can be accessed from the hall as well as from the bedroom. The Yellow Room features water views and three Singles, two of which can be pushed together and made into a King Bed with advance notice. The Pink Room features a Single. All beds have newer mattresses.
OUTDOOR SPACES: Surrounded by well-tended gardens and lawn, the house offers plenty of space for relaxing and outdoor play. The front stone terrace with teak furnishings creates a quiet sunny spot for soaking up the views. Mowed path leads across the meadow to the Somesville Landing which permits walking access, but would not be available for kayak storage or dock use. From the landing, one can follow the shore to the left to enjoy private shore access. On the road side of the house are two outbuildings: a garage for the homeowners’ personal storage, and, closer to the house, another shed where laundry facilities are located as well as the hot outdoor shower, which serves as the only shower for the home. Note: No TV, but great Internet for streaming on your personal device.

Somesville was the first village settled on Mount Desert Island in 1761 and is now a National Historic District. Walking or driving through the village is like stepping back in time, with sights of beautifully preserved examples of early New England architecture and a charming mill pond. The year round population of about 800 residents enjoy close proximity to Acadia National Park, Echo Lake, Somes Pond, and Long Pond. With its central location, all of Mt. Desert Island’s treasures are just a short drive away.
