Camp Ouloncuit
Pretty Marsh, ME 04660-
Beds: 3 Kings, 1 Queen, 7 Singles
Bring your family and friends to experience the wonders of nature from this idyllic shorefront property where five generations of kin have gathered to enjoy Mt. Desert Island from its lovely Western Bay. With Squid Cove on one side and Goose Marsh Pond on the other, this 42 acre retreat with two separate cabins is sure to provide for a summer vacation not soon forgotten. From Camp Ouloncuit, pronounced “OO-lon-KWEE” from the French phrase for “Where one cooks,” watch the osprey fish, the bald eagles soar, and the seals soak up the sun. At low tide, discover the starfish, mussels and sea urchins. And for the more adventurous type, run the tidal rapids by canoe or kayak, or journey further to the bay at the end of Squid Cove.
NEWER CABIN (3 Bdrms, 2 baths, sleeps 6): Built in 2000, Camp Ouloncuit’s newer cottage, Camp Deux, has been featured in Yankee Magazine as it beautifully combines the same spirit of the original cabin with more modern interiors. The open Living and Dining area offers a farmhouse-style dining table for 8 to 10, a large stone hearth and fireplace, and additional timber-style daybed and sofa bench. The galley-style Kitchen combines the rustic charm of country shelving with the modern appeal of granite counters and stainless steel appliances. The Primary Bedroom with King bed enjoys a private Bathroom with double vanity and shower only. Second Bedroom has King bed. Loft Bedroom with two Twin beds is accessed via an open staircase from the Living Area. Shared Full Bathroom with combined tub and shower.
ORIGINAL CABIN (3 Bdrms/2.5 Baths, sleeps 8, but more comfortable for 5): Camp Ouloncuit’s original rustic cottage, built in 1924, features an open Living and Dining area. Many of the comfortable timber daybeds and built-in sofa benches were crafted from local timber by the original owner. The modernized Kitchen with built-in table for up to six and adjacent pantry retain rustic charm, yet still offer a full set of appliances including microwave and dishwasher. Primary Bedroom with King bed enjoys the sounds of nearby rapids as well as a private Full Bathroom with double vanity and combined tub and shower. Two attached bunk rooms with a Jack and Jill bath and a half between them (two half baths on either side of a bath with combined tub and shower) can accommodate up to seven people with one Queen-sized lower bunk and 5 Twin-sized lower bunks. These bunk rooms are attached to, but not accessed directly from, the main cabin. They each have an individual entrance from the outside.
OUTDOOR SPACES: Both the original and newer cabin each offer two separate decks with furnishings so that one can enjoy a view of either Goose Marsh Pond or Squid Cove — take your pick! A deck at the newer cabin also offers a small built-in grill for barbecuing.
INTERNET: ONLY available in newer cabin.
EXTRAS: Private Dock. One-room ‘retreat space’ included for daytime use (wifi extends to this cabin, so it can be used for working remotely).

Located on the west side of Mt. Desert Island, Pretty Marsh is largely rural in nature with pristine shore. Approximately fifteen minutes from Southwest Harbor’s village center and twenty-five minutes from Bar Harbor and major park entrances, Pretty Marsh is a perfect destination for those seeking a quiet retreat while remaining within reach of shopping and restaurants.
My siblings usually travel to southern beaches and the islands for vacation. While my partner and I have also visited those places, we have also been visiting Maine every year for 20 years, from Portland to Lubec, Mt Katahdin to Moosehead to Rangely – usually with a stop for a few days in the Mt Desert area. I finally convinced my siblings to try Maine for my 60th birthday. I am trilled to say that Camp Oulonquit was the perfect spot to give them a good taste of Maine; from the 12 foot tides and the accompanying rapids, exploring the sea creatures at low tide, to kayaking with the seals at high. Also, I’m glad they got to hear the cal of the loons, which is one thing I wish we had in PA. And the fresh mussels were a real treat. The location was good. We were able to get into Bar Harbor and the park without hassle. The houses offered plenty of room to move around, but i wouldn’t recommend more than 4 adult couples and 6 children. I’d give it a 9 out of 10.

Living in a home with well water and septic, we were surprised to see a garbage disposal. Some instructions on its use would have been helpful. You may want to caution people who live in the city and are unfamiliar with septics. We did not use the garbage disposal, but when we left the sink was blocked.
Being environmentally conscious my husband was concerned that there were no provision for recycling. We would have had to traveled many miles to a recycling center.
