Nestled in a northern forest thick with ferns and wild berry bushes, this rustic house is hidden away on an isolated peninsula beside a majestic fjord, a perfect retreat. With its spectacular mountain and sea views, and glorious sunsets, it is a great spot to experience Maine at its best. Venture out to neighboring Northeast Harbor, into Acadia National Park for a mountain trek and glorious panoramas, or dip into the invigorating waters of Somes Sound if you dare. Should fog close in, set a roaring fire in the home’s showcase fireplace and settle in with a good book from its large library- perhaps even one called Frankie’s Place, A Love Story, the memoir set in this very house on this very island – and you’ll know for sure that you’ve come to the right place!
FIRST FLOOR: From the waterside deck, enter to the open Dining/Living Area, awash with light and views of Somes Sound through the home’s many windows. The Living Room features a large granite fireplace made from stones found locally and is the centerpiece of the room. Along the back wall and above in a lofted area is the expansive Library, housing many volumes. An adjacent Dining Area offers seating for up to 8 and leads to the efficient, galley-style Kitchen. One finds the Primary Bedroom and a Full Bath with tub and shower off the kitchen. The Primary Bedroom offers a King bed (twins pushed together) and a large writing desk set facing the water. Two more Bedrooms can be found off the Living Room. One has a King Bed (Twins pushed together), and the other has Twin Beds. Both bedrooms feature writing areas and share a Full Bath with tub and shower. The mattresses for all the beds are made from high quality/high density foam set on solid planking.
OUTDOOR SPACES: Two sitting areas on the waterside deck compliment this rustic home and are a natural extension of the property. Forested areas and granite ledge provide a lovely foreground to the waters of Somes Sound beyond!
EXTRAS: Note that, if you choose to bring kayaks, launching boats immediately in front of the house can be challenging due to the steep shorefront, particularly at low tide. It is recommended that boats be launched at nearby Sargent Cove or Suminsby Park instead.
We enjoyed a near perfect vacation with three generations of family at Frankie’s Place, a secluded cabin in the woods above the rugged shores of Somes Sound in the very middle of MDI …convenient to everything. The cabin is light and bright with cathedral ceilings, walls of glass, original art work, and memorabilia from around the world. The comfy furniture invites family conversation, reading in nooks, and meditative views of nature while the Buddha overseeing the cabin instills an aura of peace over all. The large living/dining area is warmed by a massive stone fireplace and plenty of dry firewood stored under the house. The 1970’s galley kitchen contains every specialized tool one might imagine. With the good internet connection we were able to work from home for five days in this very special hide-away! We were all pleasantly surprised by the comfort of the firm foam beds. The winding dirt road to the cabin provided a nice woodsy walk, while a quick drive takes you to many trailheads including the recently opened trails at the Garden Preserve. A wonderfully restorative vacation was had by all!
