Napier Cottage is one of the oldest homes in Southwest Harbor, and features the charm of high ceilings, hardwood floors and sun-drenched rooms with views of the harbor. It has been lovingly maintained, restored and enhanced over the years, and is furnished with oriental carpets and antiques, linens, a well-stocked gourmet kitchen, Wi-Fi connection, satellite TV, and many books, games and puzzles. The Cottage is situated on nearly an acre of land with lovely gardens, patio, wrap around decks and a screened, lighted gazebo. Southwest Harbor’s village center is just a walk up the road, not to mention Beal’s Lobster Pound right around the corner and near two Island Explorer bus stops, and the Cranberry Island Ferry. Glimpses of the harbor and its activities greet you from most windows, especially on the second floor. Come in June and enjoy the magnificent stands of lilacs, heirlooms from the garden of the owner’s grandmother!

This is a magical home made more magical by gorgeous gardens (including a dog-safe side yard); cozy and pretty decor; partial views of the harbor; a lovely neighborhood; and proximity to all the elegance and scenic beauty available at the Claremont (croquet, Harry’s Bar, and unparalleled views of St. Sauveur and Flying Mountains over the water from Batson Fish Camp and Little Fern). The owner’s sweet, thoughtful attention to details made Napier Cottage all the more comfortable and welcoming: homemade cookies and muffins, bread from Little Notch and breakfast fare waiting for us on arrival; the wonderful Guest Gardens (lettuce, basil, herbs, nasturtiums and tomatoes in season) in pots outside the dining room door; an incredibly organized kitchen; meticulous anticipation of guest questions and needs in the instructions and materials provided (maps, ferry schedules etc.) that were of great help to us in getting around the island despite our having come to MDI all our lives; and very specially, the extraordinary kindness and helpfulness of the owner herself. The only thing I would find difficult here would be entertaining on a large scale, given that the kitchen sink is fairly small. For up to six people, we managed well; for more ambitious gatherings we used the Claremont as Base Camp II for feedings, and could not have been happier with the arrangement. We are incredibly grateful to have found this home and come to know its lovely and accomplished owner. It’s been many an age since we had such a relaxing vacation and we hope to join the roster of repeat renters who come back to this house again and again.
