Rice Cottage
Southwest Harbor, ME 04679-
Surrounded by attractive gardens and a sweeping meadow that leads to the water’s edge, this home’s setting belies its village address. Tucked well off Main Street so that any road noise is negligible, and neighbors are mostly out of sight, historic “Rice Cottage” allows its guests to enjoy a pastoral setting within very easy reach of Southwest Harbor’s restaurants and shops, not to mention the Island Explorer Shuttle stop to freely access the rest of Mt. Desert Island’s villages and park entrances. Acadia trails and attractions are all within a short drive away. With its cozy sitting areas, lovely decor throughout, and thoughtful comforts, this home is sure to be your destination year after year!
FIRST FLOOR: Divided in two wings by a connecting Kitchen, this home features two main living spaces. To the north (on the left as you enter), is a newer Great Room with cathedral ceilings, mini-split AC/Heat pump, sitting area, TV, small dining table, and breakfast bar. This room also serves as a Primary Bedroom, featuring a Queen Bed at one end of the room. A picture window overlooks a lovely meadow, which provides an endless display of birds, blooms, and wildlife throughout the season. At certain tides, and in certain season, you can see peeks of the water beyond. A door from this space leads to a small deck with propane grill. Adjacent to this room is a walk-through Laundry Room that leads to a Full Bath with walk-in shower stall. To the south of the entry (on the right) is a well-equipped and attractive Kitchen, also with views of the meadow. Off the Kitchen is a small Office with desk. Just beyond the Kitchen is a formal Dining Room with seating for six to eight, plus a small alcove with a breakfast table and meadow views. This space opens to a formal Living Room, also with a mini-split AC/Heat Pump, with comfortable seating for a quiet evening read or conversation. Adjacent to the Living Room is the formal entry to the house.
SECOND FLOOR: Located in the south wing of the house, the second floor features two bedrooms, one with a King Bed and mini-split AC/Heat Pump, and one with Twins, on opposite sides of a center hallway. These two bedrooms share a Full Bath with Tub and Shower.
OUTDOOR SPACES: A fully fenced in yard is safe for pets and play. Accessed from the Great Room, a small deck features a propane grill, while Adirondack chairs and a picnic table on the lawn serve for outdoor seating and dining. Mt. Desert Island’s second largest village, Southwest Harbor, features a charming Main Street with an appealing assortment of shops and restaurants. The neighboring village of Manset, which is along the southern shore of the harbor, tends to be rural in nature but features a number of excellent restaurants and boatyards, including Hinckley Yacht Yard and Morris Yachts, both of which boast an international reputation. If Bar Harbor is the ‘gateway’ to Acadia, Southwest Harbor is the gateway to Acadia’s westside trails and attractions, including Seawall, Ship’s Harbor, and Echo Lake, all between five and eight minutes from the village center.
