The ‘quiet side’ of Mt. Desert Island, which includes Bass Harbor, Tremont, Seal Cove, and Bernard on the southern and western sides of the island, is much more rural in nature and only about twenty to thirty minutes to major park entrances. What Bass Harbor lacks in shopping, it makes up for in seafood restaurants and local color, as this is a village with a true ‘Down East’ flavor, as well as the famous Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.
A magical place that my family returns to each year! The location and view are amazing–private at the end of a long dirt road directly on the ocean, with a fabulous view (and amazing sunsets) through the large windows in the main room, the screened-off porch, or the chairs and picnic table in front of the house. Watching the small island in the cove in front of the house appear and disappear with the tide over morning coffee on the porch is my daily ritual. Location is perfect, on the quiet side of the island, with easy access to the less crowded part of Acadia park for hikes, carriage trails, and swimming/kayaking, but also just a short drive to the more crowded Park Road. The house is arranged very thoughtfully–the open-plan kitchen is fully-stocked, the couches are comfy, the large dining table provides a great view, full size washer and dryer are handy, and there are board games and tennis rackets and balls for the private court. Excellent wifi for work, including zoom. We’ve stayed in many places in Vt, Maine, and NH, but this is a real gem.
We love coming up here every year! It is such a special home, with an amazing history. Totally equipped with everything you might need — fully stocked kitchen, tons of linens, etc. Private, quiet, and absolutely picturesque.
This place is fabulous. Secluded and quiet with amazing ocean view. Gorgeous sunsets. A lovely place to return to after a day of hiking in Acadia. I look forward to returning next year.
