The ‘quiet side’ of Mt. Desert Island, which includes Bass Harbor, Tremont, Seal Cove, and Bernard on the southern and western sides of the island, is much more rural in nature and only about twenty to thirty minutes to major park entrances. What Bass Harbor lacks in shopping, it makes up for in seafood restaurants and local color, as this is a village with a true ‘Down East’ flavor, as well as the famous Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.
The house’s location says it all. A wide view of the harbor with our favorite lobster pound, Thurston’s, across the bay. The house is very well equipped and you can tell the owners love the house. We’ve already put in a request for next year so we can enjoy it all again.
We stayed a week in July 2021. We had originally planned to come in 2020, but the Knowles Company and the property owners helped us postpone our stay when it became clear that travel would be challenging. We’re so glad we were able to visit. Acadia National Park was the most crowded we’ve ever seen it in many years of visiting. Luckily, we had this wonderful escape on the “quiet side” of the island to return to each day. The cabin is thoughtfully furnished and welcoming. The kitchen has everything you could need. There’s also a wood stove and ample firewood available if you are comfortable using one, and an integrated tankless water heat/radiator system if you aren’t. The view of the harbor is lovely, and the cottage is arranged so that you don’t really notice the nearby road. There were also board games to entertain our young children and kayaks available for the adults. What really distinguishes Seascape from the many other places we have stayed in is the warmth and personality of the place—it really feels like you are staying in the family home that it is and not an anonymous corporate rental. We later learned that the original owner was very involved in historic preservation and it shows in the details—which include carefully restored heart pine floors and weathered doors—that pair well with the updated layout and modern conveniences.
We had a truly wonderful holiday. The property was so well equipped and had a real wow factor. The boys had a fabulous time canoeing. Sunset at Bass Harbor lighthouse and visiting the shoreline were highlights. Loved Echo Lake, nature obsessed child chased garter snakes. Two great afternoons at the beach exploring rock pools.
We loved our week away and wished we could have stayed for another. The cottage was all we needed; well stocked, great location. Super comfortable and made us feel like we were home. We can’t wait to return !!!
Absolutely wonderful home and trip to Acadia and surrounding area
