Mt. Desert Island’s second largest village, Southwest Harbor, features a charming Main Street with an appealing assortment of shops and restaurants. The neighboring village of Manset, which is along the southern shore of the harbor, tends to be rural in nature but features a number of excellent restaurants and boatyards, including Hinckley Yacht Yard and Morris Yachts, both of which boast an international reputation. If Bar Harbor is the ‘gateway’ to Acadia, Southwest Harbor is the gateway to Acadia’s westside trails and attractions, including Seawall, Ship’s Harbor, and Echo Lake, all between five and eight minutes from the village center.
The value you get from this little cottage cannot be beat. The view and the location is perfect. You’re right on the water, overlooking a stunning view of beautiful boats. There’s a beach right out front where our toddler played (supervised) for hours and had a blast. You’re a few steps away from The Claremont hotel and all that has to offer. And you’re a bike ride away from the town of Southwest Harbor. The main sitting area is cozy and the furniture seemed updated and well kept. We used the working fireplace on a particularly chilly night and enjoyed it. The primary bedroom was fantastic with an even better view than the main sitting area and an updated bathroom. This is the only bedroom with a view. The heat in the primary bedroom works very well and we were very comfortable. There is a small bedroom off the primary with kids furniture, books, and toys and it was perfect for our toddler with a full bed. I would not recommend it for a couple unless you’re tiny. The other side of the house had a queen bed and small, less updated bathroom. There was another bedroom up a spiral staircase with two twin beds that we did not use. In late September, it did get chilly in the house, so we did crank the primary bedroom heat and had to buy another space heater for the kids bedroom. We were all comfortable with that setup. If you have kids, there is a closet FULL of toys. Many aged and well-loved, but still fun. We used the kayak once and enjoyed it, but it was a little cold. The kitchen gets the job done – we did have to purchase some supplies – paper towels, laundry detergent, shampoo and soap, trash bags, and the space heater. The house overall was perfect for what we needed. It could have used a more thorough cleaning before our arrival, so I would recommend you bring that up with the rental company prior to your stay. We would definitely stay here again simply for the view and the location if it was just going to be us and our daughter.
From The Knowles Company and the Homeowners: Hi, Emily! We’re so glad you enjoyed your stay at The Legacy. Thank you for your kind review! Thanks, too, for picking up the additional space heater you requested, for which you were reimbursed. We’re sorry you didn’t find the house up to its usual standards with some household items missing. We’re always looking for ways to improve our service, and this is helpful information! We hope to see you again next fall!
Great location, with restaurants and activities near by. The house was well kept and clean. Spectacular ocean view from the property.
With only a couple weeks until my birthday trip to go, my original AirBnB booking was cancelled by the host. I scrambled to find a new place, but options were sparse. I found Knowles company and Legacy during my panicked search. Nikki was great to work with for the booking. I still can’t figure how I got so lucky to have it open. The place itself was better than any of the AirBnBs I had been chasing. The view alone made me forget anything else going on in the world. There are 4 bedrooms and that was perfect for my party of 6 adults. As a history and house nerd, I just LOVED being in a place that felt so full of family history. The only slight downside was that we spent a lot more time in the car than we originally hoped for. With it being a birthday trip, I had a lot of dinners out and day excursions planned in the Bar Harbor area. But – I would love love love to come back to this place and have nothing planned except just looking out over the water and kayaking outside the front door and searching for beach glass. If you are on a lowkey vacation, this place truly can’t be beat.
View was fabulous. Enjoyed the real fireplace. We very much enjoyed our second stay in this house. Only thing is we wish there was network TV available.
