The Old Homestead
Northeast Harbor, ME 04662-
Beds: 3 Kings, 5 Queens, 3 Singles
One of the oldest Northeast Harbor homes dating to 1820 with a 1900 addition designed by famed shingle style cottage architect Frederick Savage, this delightful home may look “old school” on the outside, but step through its gracious front door, and you’ll discover decor and comfort that is firmly in the 21st century. Open floor plan for combined living and dining, en suite baths and private spaces for work or relaxing: all come together elegantly and seamlessly to create a rare find. Water view? Sorry – there are only tiny peeks, but let that minor shortcoming motivate you to get out and enjoy all that Mt. Desert Island offers: private clubs, Northeast Harbor’s village center, and Acadia National Park trails are all within easy reach from this lovely oasis, which will be a welcome retreat after an activity filled day outside!
FIRST FLOOR: From an extensive front porch, enter a welcoming foyer. To the right, a more formal Living Room with fireplace, comfortable seating, and additional desk and work space leads to an additional work/intimate dining area towards the back of the house. To the left of the entry, the “Book Room” features a wall of bookshelves. This is a reader’s paradise with excellent lighting and cozy seating to curl up with your favorite summer read! The Book Room expands to a Dining Area with table that comfortably seats eight, and then to a fully modern Kitchen with fabulous cathedral ceiling, sitting area with TV, 6-burner gas cookstove, and miles of gorgeous counter and prep space. Note that the Kitchen features a refrigerator, with separate freezer space located in the adjoining combined Pantry and Laundry area. Just beyond the Book Room is an intimate Sitting Room and reading space as well as a door to the front covered porch. A Half Bath can also be found beyond the Sitting Room. Down a short hallway, the first Primary Bedroom with King Bed, views to front yard, window AC unit, en suite spacious Private Full Bath that features a deep soaking tub, double vanity, and fantastic walk-in shower with skylight. (Sorry – our photo of the shower just doesn’t do it justice! You’ll be pleasantly surprised upon seeing it in person!).
SECOND FLOOR NORTH WING: Accessed by stairs just off the Sitting Room, a second Primary Bedroom with King Bed features an AC window unit, and a lovely sitting space with the peeks of Somes Sound, as well as an enormous en suite Full Bath with double vanity and shower stall.
SECOND FLOOR SOUTH WING: Stairs from the Foyer lead to three Bedrooms, each with a Queen bed. These bedrooms share a Full Bath with shower stall, and another Full Bath with combined tub and shower. Each bedroom also features a window AC unit.
THIRD FLOOR: Bedroom with Twin beds, Bedroom with small Single bed. Shared Full Bath with tub only. Don’t worry – window AC units can also be found on the 3rd floor too! Fire escape rope ladders are also found in each bedroom for additional safety and second egress.

Northeast Harbor has the advantage of being quite close to Acadia National Park’s Stanley Brook entrance, not to mention the appeal of the grand, historic summer cottage estates, some of which date to the turn of the century. Northeast Harbor offers high end shopping plus some dining opportunities and boasts an active library, community center, public tennis courts and golf course, and a premier marina.
